“Personal development is the belief that you are worth the effort, time and energy needed to develop yourself.”
Denis Waitley
When people think of coaching, they often picture the one-to-one session where client and coach work through goals, challenges, and aspirations. And yes, that hour is at the heart of the process but it also impacts the time the client has outside of coaching, shaping their actions and adding value. Behind each powerful conversation is ongoing development, reflection and preparation to ensure each client gets the maximum benefit from our time together.
Research and Preparation
Before a session, I invest time in researching and preparing around your specific goals and objectives. This might mean reading up on your industry, exploring tools and techniques that could support your journey, or reflecting on our previous conversations. By the time we talk, I aim to be focused on making that hour as impactful as possible.
Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
As a coach, I’ve set myself the goal of dedicating four hours per month to CPD. That may not sound that much but it adds up to more than a whole working week per year. CPD means I’m always learning, refining my skills, and gaining alternative perspectives. Whether it’s through reading, online courses or attending professional workshops, this investment ensures that my clients benefit from fresh, evidence-based approaches that meet their needs.
Supervision for Quality and Reflection
Every six weeks I take part in supervision, both individual and peer group. This isn’t just a tick-box exercise; it’s an essential opportunity to reflect on my practice and ensure I am working safely, ethically and effectively. Supervision ensures that I’m coaching at the highest possible standard, which every client deserves, and challenges the limitations of my thinking by introducing an experienced third party or group.
From Cost to Value – the Return on Coaching
It’s easy to look at a coaching fee and think, “That’s £x for one hour—sounds expensive.” But in reality, for every hour we spend together, at least another hour is invested behind the scenes. Preparation, reflection, CPD and supervision all combine to give you the most valuable coaching experience possible. Doesn’t seem quite so expensive now, right?
